Looking for a new addition to your yard? Planting a tree can be a great way to improve the appearance of your property and cultivate sweet and tasty treats. Though fruit trees, particularly apple, can be easy to care for, many individuals assume the task is to burdensome and instead choose another type of tree. Fill up your fruit basket and bring true blossoming beauty to your yard by planting a fruit tree. Here are some great tips to help you begin the process.

  • Selecting a Type of FruitSo you have made up your mind and you want to grow a fruit tree on your property. These trees can be just as visually appealing as that are tasty, and therefore can be an excellent choice when it comes to choosing a tree. The type of fruit tree you choose should be a decision based on several factors.
    • How much room do you have, or how big will the tree get?
    • What type of fruit will grow best in your specific climate?
    • How advanced are your growing skill?
    • What kind of fruit do you prefer?
  • Before you Buy
  • The success or failure of your tree can depend largely on the condition it was purchased in. When you look for a tree, be sure to choose a young one that exhibits signs of health like strong limbs and healthy looking buds. Generally speaking you will be able to purchase a tree that is in a container or bare rooted. Look for roots that appear to be developing well. If you purchase your tree and it is in a container, check to make sure the roots have adequate space and they are not and bunched together.

  • Planting Your Tree
  • After you have purchased a healthy fruit tree, the next step is to give it a new home in your yard. Assuming you have chosen a tree free of disease and apt for growing, the next important step is to plant it properly. Choose a spot on your property that is in a sunny location. Trees that do not get the adequate amount of sun light will not grow or produce fruit to the best of their ability.

While sun is essential, it is also important to choose a place that offers your tree an adequate amount of shelter from the elements. While a fully developed fruit tree can withstand a long period of strong storm winds, your fledgling can still use a bit of shelter to keep it standing tall. It is also essential that you insert a wooden stake into the hole with the tree. The hole you dig should be at least a third bigger than the root expanse. Once the tree and its roots are thoroughly covered with soil, use a plastic tie to attach the tree to the stake for extra support and structure.

  • After You Plant Your Tree
  • Once you have covered your new tree with soil and finished the initial planting phase, your job is not done. In order for your tree to grow and mature, aftercare is essential. Moths and other pests can ruin your tree fairly quickly. During moth season, apply a grease band to the bottom-most part of your tree. This will inhibit wingless months from crawling up your tree and breading. You will also want to apply a oil based wash to your tree during the winter month to help protect it in the harsh climate.
